U.S. President Donald Trump has backed away from his previous plan to forcibly remove Palestinians from Gaza, a decision that has been praised by Hamas, the Palestinian militant group.
This shift in Trump`s stance was reported by the Qatar-based news agency, Al Jazeera.
On Wednesday, Trump made the announcement during a press briefing at the Oval Office, stating that no Palestinians would be displaced from Gaza.
His change in position came as a relief to many, especially Hamas, who expressed their approval of the move.
Hamas issued a statement in which their spokesperson, Hazem Qasem, said, "If the U.S. President’s remarks mean that he is abandoning the idea of evicting the people of Gaza, then this will be welcomed."
Earlier, five Arab countries met with U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff in Doha and presented a reconstruction plan for Gaza, which was led by Egypt.
This plan explicitly opposed Trump`s earlier proposal regarding Gaza.
Trump`s original idea involved taking control of Gaza and running it separately, a move that sparked backlash from multiple countries around the world, including Saudi Arabia, China, Russia, and Spain.
On February 4th, after a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, Trump had stated, "We will take control of Gaza and rebuild it. We will deactivate unexploded bombs and weapons there and take long-term control of it."
Experts quickly weighed in, noting that Trump`s plan appeared to contradict international law.
Displacing Gaza`s people and imposing U.S. control would amount to an occupation and violate international norms, including the Geneva Conventions.
Hamas`s reaction to Trump`s reversal indicates a significant shift in the situation, as their spokesperson expressed relief that the proposed forced displacement would not be pursued.
